Generosity flows from Bristol Water to feed our rescued horses

Bristol Water, the company supplying drinking water to approximately 1.2 million people across Bristol, North Somerset, and parts of South Gloucestershire, has generously donated mini-round bales of hay from their local land to support the care of our rescued horses this winter.

The donation comes at a crucial time, as we face a growing demand for rescue spaces and the ongoing challenges caused by this year’s unusually dry summer, which has severely affected grass growth on our pastures. Normally, pasture growth keeps pace with grazing until mid to late July, but this year, once the grass was eaten, nothing more grew. This shortage has made hay donations like Bristol Water’s especially valuable in helping feed our herd.

This year, HorseWorld has welcomed horses from across the UK, as far as Kent and Carlisle, many of them mares with foals. Caring for these vulnerable horses requires a consistent supply of hay and feed, and the combination of increased demand and poor pasture growth has put extra pressure on our resources.

Sarah Hollister, Head of Equine Welfare at HorseWorld, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Bristol Water for their generous donation. These mini hay bales will help us provide the additional feed our rescued horses, donkeys, and mules need to get through the winter.”

When Bristol Water delivered the hay, staff had the chance to meet some of our rescued horses in person. Neil Burstow, Facilities Management Manager at Bristol Water, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support a local charity. Seeing the horses we are helping feed makes this donation even more rewarding.”

Bristol Water’s contribution highlights the company’s commitment to supporting local communities and animal welfare, while helping us continue our vital work caring for vulnerable equines.

Like many equine charities, we are facing rising feed and hay costs due to limited supply and high demand. Caring for hundreds of horses, donkeys, and mules, many of whom require specialist care, is always a substantial responsibility, and this winter, the challenge is even greater.

To help meet this need, we have launched our Feed the Herd appeal, ensuring that our rescued herd continues to receive the food and care they need. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a direct difference to the lives of the horses and other equines in our care.

Feed the herd

Over 100 rescued horses, ponies, and donkeys at HorseWorld are relying on us this winter as barren fields and rising feed costs put their survival at risk. Your gift today will help provide the hay, feed, and bedding they need to stay safe, healthy, and nourished through the hardest months ahead.
