Remembering Lolly

Celebrating the life of our very special Shire horse
2015-2026

This page is dedicated to Lolly, our much-loved Shire horse and a true gentle giant. Rescued in 2017 as part of a multi-charity rescue of neglected Shire horses, she quickly became one of the most familiar and beloved faces at HorseWorld. Gentle, affectionate, and endlessly kind, Lolly was the horse everyone wanted to see when they visited, bringing joy to countless visitors, supporters, and staff alike.

Known for her calm presence and comforting nature, she had a way of making people feel at ease, and the special bond she shared with so many — especially her sponsors — will never be forgotten. Please enjoy our memories of her over the years, through photos, stories, and moments shared by all who loved her. Lolly will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Jo Coombs, HorseWorld CEO —

"I love horses, but some horses steal a little bit more of my heart than others. And our gentle giant Lolly was one of those. Whenever I was out on the farm around her herd she would always come over to the fence to say hello. At HorseWorld, we are guardians of horses for a limited time only. For some that’s because we can rehabilitate them to move onto a loving home on loan, for others it’s because their early life experiences or health mean that our time with them is going to be limited. Lolly had a chronic progressive illness but she lived happily here without pain for as long as possible, playing a vital role as the matron of a large herd and a calming presence for the young people on Discovery - and in fact every staff member and visitor to the site. All our horses are loved and cared for but some leave larger shoes to fill than others. If you would like to leave a donation in Lolly’s memory to help us look after other gentle giants, we would be extremely grateful."

Sarah Hollister, Head of Equine Welfare —

"Lolly came to HorseWorld in 2017 as a vulnerable young horse, and it has been a true privilege to witness her journey of recovery and growth (and boy, did she grow!). Over the years, I’ve seen her touch countless lives, from the dedicated grooms who cared for her every day and delighted in her antics, to colleagues who found calm and comfort in her presence, to supporters who recognised her rare combination of strength and gentleness. Whether soaking up attention or simply standing quietly beside someone who needed her, Lolly had an extraordinary way of making people feel at ease. She certainly knew she was loved and never shied away from the limelight. More recently, she shared that same quiet magic with our Discovery young people, reminding me time and again of the power of gentleness freely chosen. Lolly is going to be sorely missed by so many, but I take great comfort in the many happy, content years we were lucky enough to share with her."
