A heartbreaking call...
In 2023, HorseWorld was contacted by the RSPCA with an urgent plea to care for a severely malnourished Irish Thoroughbred named Murphy. The 27-year-old gelding had been rescued following a neglect case and desperately needed specialist equine rehabilitation. When Murphy arrived at HorseWorld, he was in a shocking condition. With a body condition score of just 0.5, he was emaciated - little more than skin and bone. It was clear he needed immediate veterinary intervention and a carefully managed recovery plan.
The road to recovery...
Our vets set to work assessing Murphy straight away, giving him a full blood profile and overall health check. The dentist attended to his teeth, he was wormed and put on a course of steroids to help give him boost in the right direction. Given his severe malnourishment, rebuilding Murphy’s strength required a carefully structured feeding programme. Our team developed a tailored nutrition plan designed to restore his condition gradually and safely, without overwhelming his fragile system. Equine rehabilitation for cases like Murphy’s requires patience, expertise, and close monitoring - something our team is highly experienced in providing. Day by day, Murphy started to look brighter. With patience, consistency, and expert care, his transformation was underway.
A story with a twist...
While Murphy’s physical recovery began steadily, his story proved more complex than expected. Murphy had originally come from a loving home. His owner, Charlotte, had entrusted his care to someone who ultimately neglected him, leading to the RSPCA seizure. The situation was deeply distressing for Charlotte, who had always ensured Murphy received excellent care during the many years he was with her. After reviewing the circumstances and assessing Charlotte’s ability to meet Murphy’s needs, we had no concerns about the high standard of care and love she could provide Murphy.
The journey home...
As Murphy regained weight and strength, plans were set in motion for his return home. It was a joyful moment when he was finally reunited with his family - back where he belonged. Today, he is settled, happy, and enjoying his retirement in comfort with his family.
