Elsa's Story

In 2020, HorseWorld, with the help of the RSPCA, stepped in to rescue neglected ponies from one of the largest welfare cases we had ever faced. Over 100 ponies were being left to breed indiscriminately, with little to no care. Living conditions had deteriorated so badly due to the owner’s struggles with mental health that urgent intervention was needed.

HorseWorld took in five Welsh ponies from this case, one of whom was a sweet yet nervous grey mare, who we named Elsa.

fragile beginning...

When Elsa arrived, she was underweight, unwell, and pregnant. Her body showed the signs of neglect, and her spirit was clearly shaken. The trauma she had endured left her wary of humans and in need of gentle, patient handling.

Despite her poor condition, Elsa gave birth to a healthy colt, who we named Buttons. The little foal brought hope during a very difficult time, but Elsa’s journey to recovery was far from over. She needed time, space, and specialist rehabilitation to heal both physically and emotionally.

Elsa's  journey to Discovery...

Our team worked slowly and carefully with Elsa, showing her consistent kindness and helping her to rebuild her trust in people. Over time, her true nature began to shine through.

By 2024, Elsa had blossomed into a calm, kind pony who loved spending time with children. Her sweet personality made her the perfect candidate for our Discovery programme, which helps vulnerable young people build confidence, resilience, and trust through working with horses. Elsa began her training and quickly became a firm favourite among the Discovery herd.

The next  chapter...

Elsa’s foal, Buttons, grew into a healthy, playful and inquisitive youngster. After completing a personalised training plan to build his confidence, it was decided that we would start looking for a special home for him through our rehoming scheme.

In 2024, he was placed in a loving loan home where he is continuing to thrive with the companionship of another Welsh pony called Crom. His new family delights in his curious nature, and he is growing into a well-mannered, much-loved member of their herd.

From a life of neglect to becoming a beloved Discovery pony, Elsa’s transformation is nothing short of inspiring. Once a frightened mare with little trust in people, she is now helping children and young people build brighter futures, while enjoying the love, care, and respect she always deserved.

Her journey shows the incredible difference that rescue, rehabilitation, and supporter generosity can make.
