A life on the brink...
In August 2025, HorseWorld was contacted by the RSPCA with concerns about an emaciated Thoroughbred-cross. An urgent veterinary assessment confirmed that the horse was in a critical condition and required immediate intervention. With the authority provided by the vets, the horse was seized on welfare grounds. HorseWorld attended the site alongside police to support the process and enforce the necessary powers of removal, as the owner was uncontactable at the time.
On arrival to the rescue site, the horse—later renamed Clyde—was found to be in a deeply concerning condition. He had a body condition score of 0 and was severely emaciated, with his ribs, hips and spine clearly visible beneath thin, fragile skin. He was also dehydrated and had very few remaining teeth, significantly limiting his ability to eat. There was no suitable food available to meet his needs, and his overall condition was consistent with prolonged neglect. His hooves also reflected a lack of care, with feet that were splayed and cracked. He was taken to HorseWorld where he could start his journey to recovery.
Safe at HorseWorld...
Back at HorseWorld, we began a carefully managed, specialist feeding plan tailored to Clyde’s needs. One of the greatest concerns was whether Clyde’s fragile body could withstand rehabilitation. In cases of severe emaciation, reintroducing food too quickly can be life-threatening. Working closely with veterinary experts, HorseWorld carefully introduced a controlled, fibre-based diet, gradually increasing his intake while closely monitoring his condition. Despite having very few teeth, Clyde’s appetite remained strong. Even in his weakest moments, he continued to take in what he could, and slowly but surely, his body began to respond to the love and care he received. Despite everything he had been through, he loved human company. His sweet, affectionate nature was evident from the very first interaction with our grooms.
A journey to recovery...
Small signs of improvement became visible as he began to gain weight and strength, offering hope after such a difficult start. His skin, which had been sore and fragile, improved with consistent daily care. As his strength grew, he was gradually introduced to other horses, where he began to form bonds and find comfort within a herd environment once again.
Finding friendship with Fagan...
As Clyde continued to settle into his new life, he was introduced to other horses, forming the kind of gentle, reassuring bonds he had been missing. Among these new friendships was Fagan, a fellow resident who has become an important companion to him. Now, the two can often be seen together - sharing space, companionship, and the quiet comfort of each other’s presence. At 33, Fagan stands alongside Clyde as one of HorseWorld’s oldest residents, and together they are a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of lifelong care. Their bond highlights the positive impact that companionship can have, offering both horses a sense of security and belonging as they enjoy the later chapters of their lives in safety and peace.
Looking ahead...
Clyde continues to gain weight and strength, and as an older horse, his progress is carefully managed to ensure he remains comfortable and healthy. Now thriving within the HorseWorld herd, he is almost unrecognisable from the horse who first arrived in such a fragile state. Seeing him settled, content, and enjoying life alongside his companions is something we are incredibly proud of. Clyde’s journey is a powerful reminder of what our work can achieve—and of the difference a second chance can make.
