A mare in desperate need...
We rescued Ash in 2022 with two other mares - all in poor condition. Ash was underweight, weak, and her coat was crawling with lice, clear signs that she had been neglected for a long period of time. Even more heart-breaking was the fact that she was heavily pregnant, despite being only four years old herself - far too young to be carrying a foal safely. Her delicate white feathers were stained with an unidentified, oil-like substance that clung stubbornly to her legs, adding to her discomfort. Everything about her condition told the same story: Ash had been surviving, not living. She needed urgent help, and she found it at HorseWorld.
Welcoming Oakley...
Despite her fragile and malnourished state, Ash showed extraordinary strength and resilience. Under the careful monitoring of the HorseWorld grooms and veterinary team, she gave birth to a healthy foal who was lovingly named Oakley. For Ash, becoming a mother so young was physically taxing, but her devotion was unwavering. She nurtured Oakley with everything she had, even while she herself was still in desperate need of care. Once Oakley was old enough to be safely weaned, Ash finally had the chance to focus on her own recovery - something she’d never truly been allowed before. Oakley, meanwhile, thrived under the safety and structure of life at HorseWorld and joined a herd of other youngsters to play with.
Healing through herd life...
Ash joined one of HorseWorld’s herds, where she could relax, decompress, and learn to trust. Surrounded by calm, confident horses, she slowly regained her sense of security. Her personalised rehabilitation plan included nutritious feeding, parasite treatments, medical support, and gentle handling to build her confidence. As the weeks passed, her physical condition improved dramatically - her body regained strength, her coat brightened, and her eyes began to reflect curiosity rather than fear. Herd life played a huge role in helping her heal both mentally and physically. Once Ash was healthy enough to begin her groundwork and handling sessions, she surprised everyone with her natural aptitude for learning. She picked up new skills quickly and showed a lovely willingness to engage with her handlers. Her soft, gentle nature shone through, proving she was not only capable of a new start but excited for one.
Joining the Discovery programme...
As Ash continued to grow in confidence and strength, it became clear she had the perfect temperament for Discovery - our equine-assisted learning programme for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people. Discovery helps young people build confidence, emotional awareness, communication skills, and resilience by working alongside gentle, patient horses like Ash. Ash thrived in this new role: Her gentle nature, quiet empathy, and willingness to connect made her a wonderful partner for the young people taking part in the sessions. The structured routine and positive interactions further supported her emotional development, and she quickly became a valued and trusted member of the Discovery equine herd. On Discovery, Ash found not only stability but purpose. The programme allowed her to continue healing while making a real difference in the lives of young people who, like her, needed understanding, safety, and support.
Oakley's bright future...
While Ash settled into Discovery, Oakley continued to flourish as a young and inquisitive horse. When the time was right, he moved into a loving foster home where he could receive more individual attention and develop his confidence in a family environment. Oakley has thrived in foster care. Described as curious, friendly, and full of cheeky character, he has embraced every new experience. His foster home has provided him with invaluable socialisation, nurturing his growth and preparing him for a bright future - one filled with love, stability, and opportunity. Ash and Oakley’s journey embodies the heart of HorseWorld’s mission. Ash has transformed from a neglected, malnourished young mare into a calm, confident horse enjoying a secure and meaningful role in Discovery. Oakley, safe from day one, has grown into a strong and happy youngster who is thriving in his foster home.
