Meet Todd

Todd is a 13 year old bay Dartmoor X gelding, standing at 11.3hh. He arrived at HorseWorld in 2022 as sadly his previous owners passed away and he had no-one left care for him. This resulted in his sweet itch being unmanaged and he was covered in open sores. Todd has since been rehabilitated and he looks great now, with just some white hairs remaining from old scarring. Todd is looking for an adult only home as a non-ridden field companion where his sweet-itch management plan will be continued, ideally to live with another equine whose management needs are similar.

Todd’s sweet itch management plan is stricter over the spring/summer months, approximately March-October - he is kept in an electrified paddock and not stabled (as he will rub even for short periods). Todd also wears fly rugs/masks and has a weekly application of Switch, which works well to prevent him from being itchy and rubbing. His current rug is a boet style zebra print which fits him well and is effective at keeping the insects off him. He is very good to be rugged/creamed and does enjoy a grooming routine a few times a week. Over the winter, approximately November to February, he has been clipped and worn a light turnout rug or has been unrugged when temperatures are cold enough for no insects/midges to be active enough to irritate him. Generally, for Todd’s winter regime he hasn’t needed an electrified paddock or switch application, but needs careful monitoring to ensure he doesn’t become itchy.

Todd can live in a mixed herd and gets on well with other horses - he is often seen grooming and playing. He is active in the field and would make a good companion to another horse that would like a playful friend. Todd currently lives in a 3 acre paddock in a herd of geldings on bare/low quality grass topped up with hay as needed. Over winter he grazes standing hay on varying terrain with no issues and has not needed a hard feed.

Todd would be best suited to an adult handler due to his sweet-itch management needs and he is a characterful pony who at times can push boundaries and be strong to lead, so would not be an appropriate pony for children to handle. We believe he would make a loving companion for the right home and deserves to find someone to love him and manage his needs.
