Meet Katniss

Katniss was rescued in 2016 along with two other horses. The group were named after characters in the Hunger games. Katniss has a very resilient nature considering everything she has endured and is the only one remaining of the group.  Katniss is a beautiful 15.1hh bay mare with white markings, we estimate her age to be around 10 years old and her breed to be a Pacer X. She was extremely nervous and flighty when she was rescued but when settled at HorseWorld and with patient rehabilitation from our team, she has come on in leaps and bounds with her confidence and training.

It was hoped that Katniss would be able to be backed, but sadly she presented with physical issues after beginning the initial stages of her groundwork. After thorough veterinary assessments we found that Katniss has a mild neurological condition that affects her hind limbs making her unsuitable for bringing into work. The condition does not affect her quality of life and she is ready to be rehomed as a non-ridden companion. We believe Katniss would make a stunning addition to a herd in a quiet environment.

Katniss lives out 24/7 here and being a lighter type horse does well on good grazing. We have kept her on varying terrain, hilly/flat, poor/richer grazing and she always seems to adjust well. She has not needed restricting nor needed any extra hard feed, just hay rations over the winter months. Katniss can wear a rug in the colder season and is a good girl about having it put on and off. She has lived in a mixed herd and seems to get along well with all equines- mares and geldings; she is active in the field and has been a good ‘nanny’ to the youngsters. Katniss has been stabled here for short periods but is happiest with a free access barn/ hardstanding area for shelter. Primarily living out with access to shelter would be most suited to her. Katniss does enjoy attention from her grooms and would suit an occasional grooming routine with limited time being tied up and led around. Katniss is generally well behaved for our farrier and vet but  we have found that she can be more difficult for handling on her hind legs. She is improving with this over time and it helps when she has trust in her handler.

Katniss needs somebody who is understanding of her behaviour and is willing and able to spend time building a relationship with her. Katniss can be highly strung at times but this is mainly stimulated by the environment around her.  Katniss would require a confident and competent handler to be able to manage her if she became stressed. However, we believe there is a home out there that would be quiet and relaxing for her, allowing Katniss to live out a peaceful existence, where she will always have an equine friend by her side and never be left alone.

Whilst Katniss has a few quirks, we truly believe she has the potential to be a wonderful and loving companion in the right home and she is really deserving to have the chance to thrive with a 1:1 handler. Please message our rehoming team if you feel you have a well suited home for this beautiful mare.
