Fears are faced as supporters raise money for charity
Supporters of the Bristol-based animal welfare charity HorseWorld faced their fears as they abseiled 100 feet down St Michael's Church Tower, Dundry, to help raise funds for the charity’s Discovery Courses.
Karen Hardwick and Liz Shaw completed the dizzying challenge on Sunday 29th September, raising in total over £600. Sponsorship money raised from this challenge will go directly towards helping vulnerable young people to take part in HorseWorld’s Discovery courses.
HorseWorld launched their Discovery courses four years ago bringing rescued horses together with vulnerable young people. The programme is aimed at 6-19 year olds who may be outside mainstream schooling due to learning disabilities or behavioural, social and emotional difficulties or may be at risk of under-achieving. Some may come from dysfunctional and chaotic backgrounds. Discovery can have particular benefits for young people within the autistic spectrum and those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Discovery Course Manager, Sharon Howell explains “Over 400 students have now undertaken the programme. “The work we do really can change a young person’s life. We have found that the horse is a unique and ideal tool for the promotion of emotional growth and learning. Working with horses enhances levels of self-confidence and concentration, communication and team-building skills. Quite a few of the students have said they can relate to the rescued horses and sympathise with them. Many of these young people have been able to return to mainstream schooling after attending the Discovery programme, or have gone on to college courses; something which would previously have been out of the question for them.
“All of the staff and volunteers at HorseWorld want to thank Karen and Liz for their braveness and kind hearts. £600 will make such a difference to Discovery, and will allow HorseWorld to continue this life changing work.”
