Meet Pumpkin

***Pumpkin is nearing the final stages of being ready for rehoming, please click the apply link to register your interest in him***

Pumpkin is a 2 year old Welsh Mountain Pony gelding, he is a handsome chestnut with white markings and stands around 11.2hh. He arrived with four other chestnut Welsh ponies we’ve termed the ‘p ponies’ as each was named after foods beginning with ‘p’. We rescued them earlier in the year of 2023 from a moor in Wales, they were semi-feral, abandoned and malnourished with no one caring for them. Pumpkin was a colt and particularly nervous and scraggily with dreadlocks of hair hanging off him. With patient handling our team gained the ponies trust and some of them including Pumpkin have been doing so well that they are nearly at the point of being ready to be re-homed.

Pumpkin is looking for a special home with a patient handler experienced with youngsters. Pumpkin has done well with his initial handling and he will be caught in an open field, be led, have all four feet picked out and be groomed, he has been seen by the farrier, vet and chiropractor. Day by day he is growing in confidence but he is still at the start of his education into domesticated pony life, so he needs a handler who is understanding of this and will work with him at his pace.

Since Pumpkin has been in our care he hasn’t had any health issues but he does need more regular farrier visits as his hooves grow quickly and get long in the toe. He lived in a gelding herd for a long while but now he is gelded we will try him in a mixed herd and see how he takes too living with mares. Pumpkin currently lives out 24/7 with access to shelter but being only young he could be trained into a stabling routine. Pumpkin has been stabled overnight and for short periods here at HorseWorld but being a native type pony he is more than happy to be living out all the time.

Pumpkin hasn’t needed to be rugged or have any supplementary feed, just extra hay rations over the winter. He is still growing but when he is fully matured he may need to have restricted grazing in the summer months to prevent him from becoming overweight. Pumpkin is quite low down in the herd order and seems to get on well with most other horses. He would be suited to living with another youngster so he can still have a playmate but also have an older established horse present that he can continue learning about domesticated life from. We believe he would be an easy fit into most herd dynamics but he may take a while to settle in due to his age and rescued background.

Pumpkin would be an incredibly rewarding pony to bring on and deserves to find a loving new loaner who he can start to build a strong bond with. If you feel you could offer a quiet home that would allow Pumpkin to continue his handling training, then please register your interest by clicking the link.
