Legendary horse whisperer Monty Roberts visits HorseWorld

Legendary ‘horse whisperer’ Monty Roberts spent a day at leading animal charity HorseWorld, finding out more about their rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work and meeting some of the horses that are successfully being rehabilitated by the Bristol-based organisation.

Monty Roberts is creator of the world-renowned and revolutionary equine training technique 'Join-up'. He is also an award-winning trainer of championship horses, best-selling author, Hollywood stunt man, and foster dad to 47 children (in addition to three of his own).

The “man who listens to horses” has won countless awards, received immense worldwide press coverage, put three books on the New York Times best-seller list, and has trained some of the Queen’s equestrian team in London. His personal experience, having experienced an abusive childhood himself and of having witnessed too many horses “broken” by violent, traditional methods, has driven him to spread his message of non-violence.  He often expresses that his goal in life is to leave the world a better place for horses and for people.

During his visit (on 1 November 2011) Mr Roberts met rescued animals that are being looked after at the charity’s popular Whitchurch visitor attraction, including crowd favourites Buddy (pictured), Jerry, JoJo and Severn-Up, the contrasting stories of whom have been widely featured by national and international media in recent weeks.

He also took part in question and answer sessions with charity volunteers, staff and supporters, and explained the reasons why he broke away from his father’s traditional methods to create the pioneering and influential techniques that have now become part-and-parcel of equine training across the globe.

HorseWorld Managing Director Mark Owen said: “It was a genuine honour to welcome Monty Roberts to HorseWorld. Staff, volunteers and supporters felt privileged not only to meet him but also to share some of HorseWorld’s success stories with this legendary man. Everybody present enjoyed receiving a fascinating and educational first-hand insight from the man who listens to horses."
